Caritas Fiji successfully hosted a three-day workshop titled “Empowering Preparedness and Resilient Communities” from 20–22 November at the Nukubalavu Community Hall in Savusavu, Vanua Levu. The event brought together 206 participants from eighteen communities across Cakaudrove and Macuata, highlighting a strong and timely commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience—especially as Fiji heads into the cyclone season.

The workshop focused on equipping individuals, families, and communities with the vital knowledge and skills needed to anticipate, withstand, and recover from disasters, climate impacts, economic shocks, and social challenges. With the cyclone season approaching, participants were reminded of the importance of being proactive, well-prepared, and informed. Over the three days, they explored practical approaches to safeguarding livelihoods, strengthening early-warning responses, and ensuring that vulnerable groups are protected before, during, and after emergencies.

A key emphasis was placed on inclusive participation, ensuring that women, youths, persons with disabilities, elders, and community leaders were at the centre of discussions and planning. Participants learned about household preparedness, community response strategies, and ways to enhance their resilience so they can face future uncertainties with greater confidence.

The workshop also promoted sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience. One of the standout sessions was delivered by ANZ, represented by Vani Sikiti, who offered financial literacy training designed to help families manage their finances, prepare for unexpected events, and strengthen their recovery capacity following disasters.

Safeguarding remained a central theme throughout the program. Participants engaged in important conversations on maintaining safety and dignity during emergencies, strengthening women’s leadership, addressing youth concerns, and improving support systems for persons with disabilities. These discussions contributed to a deeper community understanding of how to ensure that all groups remain visible and protected during crisis situations.

The workshop drew on the expertise of 19 stakeholders who contributed their knowledge across various sectors. These included the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management—represented by Senior Disaster Risk Reduction Officer Joji Waqata—along with officers and medical staff from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. Additional support came from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Employment, Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Emergency services and protection agencies also played an essential role. Representatives from the National Fire Authority, Fiji Police Force, and Empower Pacific provided insights into emergency response, psychosocial support, safety measures, and protection protocols. Their involvement strengthened coordination between communities and key service providers, ensuring that communication pathways are clear and effective—an especially important factor during cyclone season when rapid information-sharing can save lives.

Participants came from a wide range of communities including Solevu, Nawaido, Kilaka, Vuya, Cavaga, Makolei, Nabalabalawa, Savurekareka, Nabalebale, Vakativa, Nukubalavu, Urata,Lomaloma, Jerusalemi, Napuka, Nabala, and Labasa. Their strong engagement demonstrated a shared desire to enhance community preparedness and build a united approach to disaster resilience.

Caritas Fiji extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, community leaders, and partners who contributed to the success of this workshop. A special acknowledgement is given to ANZ for their financial literacy training, and to all government ministries, NGOs, and emergency service partners for offering their time and expertise.

As Fiji enters the cyclone season, this training serves as a timely reminder of the importance of community preparedness, strong partnerships, and collective responsibility. Caritas Fiji remains committed to supporting communities across the country as they work to safeguard their families, strengthen their livelihoods, and build a more resilient and secure future.
