Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR):

Our nation regularly experiences extreme weather conditions such as tropical cyclones, floods, prolonged droughts, and severe storms that often trigger landslides and coastal erosion. Fiji also sits within a geologically active region, making it susceptible to earthquakes and potential volcanic activity, which can in turn generate tsunamis and widespread destruction. Beyond these physical hazards, climate change continues to exacerbate these risks through rising sea levels, unpredictable rainfall patterns, food insecurity, and environmental degradation.

In addition, recent years have shown that disasters are not only physical in nature. Since 2020, Fiji and the wider Pacific region have been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which placed immense strain on health systems, economies, and vulnerable populations. This has further demonstrated the importance of holistic disaster preparedness that considers both environmental and social risks.

The Disaster Management Programme of Caritas Fiji works closely with Caritas Commissions within the Archdiocese of Suva and parish networks to proactively address disaster risks and strengthen local preparedness. Our approach focuses on reducing vulnerability, enhancing community resilience, and ensuring dignified, timely, and inclusive humanitarian responses.
