SAVUSAVU, VANUALEVU
DRR Disaster Kit Distribution
Caritas Fiji recently carried out the distribution of disaster kits across several communities in Savusavu, including St Andrews Parish, Nabalebale Village, Vakativa Village, Jerusalemi and Nabaci Villages, Nukubalavu Village, Nabaka Village, Nasinu Village, Dromuninuku Village, and Naweni Village.
This initiative follows the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) workshop previously held in Savusavu, which brought together Caritas Fiji representatives and community members to develop and present their local disaster preparedness plans.
In response to the needs identified during the workshop, the Caritas Fiji Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) team returned to the communities to deliver essential disaster kits. These kits will be placed with the respective trained Disaster Committees in each village. Each committee member is equipped and trained to respond effectively, ensuring they can alert and guide villagers when a disaster strikes.
This initiative is expected to benefit thousands of lives by strengthening local preparedness and ensuring communities are better positioned to respond swiftly and safely during emergencies.
Caritas Fiji also plans to roll out Disaster Trials within these villages in the coming months. These trials will test and evaluate community response mechanisms, ensuring that the disaster kits and preparedness plans are practical, effective, and inclusive.
Caritas Fiji remains committed to empowering communities to build resilience through faith, collaboration, and proactive disaster preparedness
