Bringing Voices Together for a Stronger, Safer Community

.

In January 2025, Caritas Fiji partnered with Saint Martin de Porres Parish to hold a week-long consultation across all eight villages of Lakeba Island. To listen, learn, and work with the community to identify their biggest social and environmental challenges—and find local solutions.

More than 250 villagers participated in group discussions using the “Social Analysis” method, sharing concerns like teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, drug abuse, and the impacts of climate change, including coastal flooding and water shortages.

The community proposed practical actions: stronger village rules, more awareness programs, better water storage, mangrove planting, and a sea wall. They also requested support for tools like a projector, water tanks, and a parish vehicle to better serve the island.

This consultation sparked new unity across faiths, empowered local voices, and set a foundation for real, lasting change.
