Building Justice, Equality, and Empowered Communities

Advocacy Program: Building Justice, Equality, and Empowered Communities.

At Caritas Fiji, our Advocacy Program unites two powerful missions: advancing social and ecological justice while promoting gender equality and dignity for all. This program tackles the deep-rooted issues of poverty, climate injustice, and gender-based violence through faith-driven, people-centered action.

We believe that every individual has a voice worth hearing. That’s why we work closely with local communities to raise awareness, challenge unjust systems, and empower women, men, and youth to become agents of change. From community workshops to national advocacy campaigns, we support people in standing up for their rights, building sustainable livelihoods, and protecting our environment.

Our advocacy also centers on equality in leadership. We actively support women and youth to step into decision-making roles and encourage men to be champions of respectful, non-violent relationships. This holistic approach reflects our Catholic values and our deep commitment to creating a just, inclusive Fiji.

We recognize that the universe is a delicate, interconnected system where any imbalance—whether social, economic, or ecological—can lead to serious harm. As Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si’, our relationships with God, with one another, and with the earth are fundamentally linked. The Advocacy Program addresses these relationships by confronting the injustices caused by modern economic systems that often favor the elite at the expense of the vulnerable.

Caritas Fiji believes the economy should serve the people—not the other way around. That’s why we speak out, even when it’s uncomfortable. Speaking truth to power takes courage, but it’s essential to build a society rooted in justice, compassion, and good governance. Our work isn’t just about responding to problems; it’s about envisioning and creating a world where dignity, equity, and sustainability define every community.

We invite everyone—faith communities, civil society, and individuals—to walk with us in this journey

Lakeba Parish Community Consultation 2025

Lakeba Island, part of Fiji’s remote Lau group, is facing rising social and environmental challenges as more families leave for urban areas and climate impacts worsen. In response, Caritas Fiji led a unique week-long consultation in January 2025 to bring villagers together, listen to their concerns, and co-create solutions. Through deep dialogue and grassroots participation, eight villages united around shared problems and community-driven action. What began as a consultation became a spark for hope, collaboration, and change
