Our Story
Caritas Fiji, as the social arm of the Catholic Church, is a dedicated organisation called to put faith and love into action to build a socially and ecologically just Fijian society. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to build a Fijian society in which all people reach their full human potential in the context of a socially and ecologically just society. Caritas Fiji’s mandate comes from the Church. It is rooted in the life and words of Jesus Christ – the Good News and in the vast wealth of Catholic teaching. It is particularly guided by Catholic social teachings. Whilst the principles of Catholic social teachings remain constant in our mission, we also reflect on the ‘signs of the times’ through a ‘see, judge and act’ methodology.
Caritas Fiji is only going into its fifth year since its establishment in Fiji, however we are grateful that we are a member of an Internationally and regionally recognized confederation and which is the second largest humanitarian organisation in the world and serves in more than 200 countries. With the support of our donors, we are committed to championing timely Inclusive Humanitarian, Justice and Development Responses for a Socially, Economically and Ecologically balanced Society.
In our journey together, we uphold the aspirations of the Archbishop of Suva and work with local parishes within the Archdiocese of Suva, local communities, civil society organisations, national and regional institutions and interested individuals to serve the people of Fiji. We are confident that through our fraternal cooperation the aforementioned we will build a balanced family that honours and respects the dignity of everyone and also maintain the integrity of the vanua on which we live and for which we honour as our mother and all its created beings as brothers and sisters.
Our strategic goal is built on a vision of inclusivity. It involves creating spaces for inclusive and communal participation with honour and respect of the other in space and time, and implies the recognition of the dignity of the person and the power that derives from the sacred domain. From this derives the quality of humility and empowering vulnerability. It is the enabling ground for cultural creativity, the time of plenty, the time when the land smiles on the community, the time of building and the time of the people’s humanity comes to flower. Metaphorically speaking, it is a time when the vanua stands tall and allows the people to worship, to travel, to celebrate community and relatedness without fear. It is our Kairos moment of recovering our positive strengths for the communities and
Fiji as a society to achieve equilibrium (E sa gauna donu me sau rabu na vanua ko Viti).

Our Vision
Caritas Fiji, as the social arm of the Catholic Church, will associate with the poor as the chosen people of God and build a community of solidarity and concern for the poor leading to a culture of love in all the communities in Fiji. In this spirit the work of Caritas will be animated by the following vision:
Caritas Archdiocese of Suva commits to cultivating a socially and ecologically just society.
CATHOLIC IDENTITY (VALUES)
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Caritas Fiji’s approach is based on the Gospel and Social Teachings of the Catholic Church which focus on the dignity of the human person. Caritas’ work with the poor and their causes manifests God’s love for all creation. Caritas believes in the work of charity towards the poor as well as empowering the poor to be agents of their liberation and development. Caritas Fiji also commits itself to caring for the earth in line with the encyclical Laudato Si.

Dignity of the Human Person
The dignity of the human person is our foundational moral value. We reject the reification of the poor and seek to make them not objects of our pity but subjects of their own development and agents of change. In this way, Caritas makes God’s love for creation manifest in the world.

Option for the Poor
The dignity of the human person is our foundational moral value. We reject the reification of the poor and seek to make them not objects of our pity but subjects of their own development and agents of change. In this way, Caritas makes God’s love for creation manifest in the world.

Universal Destination of the Earth’s Goods
Any economic, social, political or cultural structure which opposes, oppresses and prevents change towards justice is sinful. We seek to encourage our membership to redress the balance by working to transform these structures into graced social structures which favour the poor.

Solidarity
Caritas seeks to inculcate in its membership and in its dealings with other nongovernmental organisations and global institutions a genuine sense of solidarity. Our solidarity with the poor should not be simply a feeling of sympathy but of empathy and a firm and persevering determination to commit ourselves to the common good

Stewardship
Caritas commits itself to being in solidarity not only with people but with the whole of creation and therefore seeks to act in an environmentally sustainable way at all times. Caritas holds in paramount importance the human and the environmental balance through an integral ecology.
