WASH Program: Clean Water. Safe Sanitation. Healthy Communities
Caritas Fiji recognises that water as an organisational activity is more than providing water and sanitation but the overall inclusion of health. It is more than water management. It is about ensuring that our commitment to the delivery of WASH (Water, Sanitation and Health) activities is inclusive of quality of water and of the services attached to it. It is about ensuring that our communities are entrusted with and equipped with the skills to manage, coordinate water systems maintenance and management.
Caritas Fiji recognises that WASH is core and a foundation to our Social, Ecological Justice, Advocacy, Disaster Management, Preparedness and Resilience work.
Caritas Fiji recognises that the provision of quality water is essential to our Disaster Preparedness, Readiness and Response work in our communities. CF also recognises that the lack of water and or access to quality water and or the lack of can lead to waterborne disease. CF through its ongoing WASH programme notes that excess water has led to an increase in common water borne diseases such as diarrhoea.
Caritas Fiji recognise the need to safeguard our water system. Safeguarding water involves protecting water sources and ensuring the availability of clean, safe water for various uses. This includes preventing water pollution, conserving water resources, and implementing effective water treatment and management strategies. Key aspects of safeguarding water include:
Water Conservation:
This involves practices and techniques to use freshwater resources sustainably. Examples include reducing water consumption in households, implementing water-efficient landscaping, and promoting water-wise agricultural practices.
Water Quality:
Protecting water sources from pollution is crucial. This involves preventing the discharge of pollutants into water bodies, proper disposal of chemicals and waste, and minimizing the use of pesticides and fertilizers.
Water Treatment:
Implementing effective water treatment technologies is essential to remove contaminants and ensure water safety for drinking and other uses. Various methods exist, including filtration, disinfection, and advanced treatment processes.
Water Management:
This involves implementing strategies to manage water resources effectively, including monitoring water quality, developing water management plans, and ensuring equitable access to water.
Community Involvement:
Raising awareness about the importance of water conservation and protection, engaging communities in water-related activities, and advocating for strong water policies are vital.
